Summer 2012 bucket list

Somewhere in the blogosphere Heather saw a post on making a summer bucket list. But can we find what blog it was now? Noooooo. Well regardless, we thought it was brilliant and decided to make our own! With this being my first summer living in California, mine is pretty aggressive {see below}.

{Picture taken by Sue – Perishable Perspectives} – I want one so bad!
1. Drink wine in Sonoma
2. Drink wine in Napa {planned for August}; and maybe enjoy a mud bath
3. Spend a day at the Santa Cruz boardwalk {already planned for Heather’s birthday}
4. Go whale-watching
5. Go paddle surfing
6. Go camping or cabining {Yosemite, Lake Tahoe or Cambria]
7. Go white-water rafting {planned for September}
8. Eat a macaroon
9. Make a succulent frame {planned for later this month}
10. Host a pie party
11. Enjoy a cocktail at the top of the Marriott Marquis hotel in San Fran {sister, get ready!}
12. Attend a meditation session
13. See Mendocino
14. Plant an herb box
And… I’m stopping there!  Here is Heather’s. I’m pretty sure I’ll be accomplishing some of hers, too ;) or tagging along at least.
What are your to-do’s for this summer? Please share!!!

Do you journal?

As a little girl I used to write in a journal all the time. I even had one on my old Packard Bell computer {the beginning of my blog obsession obviously}. After junior high, my entries really died down. I bought another journal during my first year of marriage and maybe wrote in it 5 times {and I’ve been married for over 4 years now}. I then turned it into a gratitude journal, jotting down a few things I was thankful for each day, here and there.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my friend Dee from Toastmasters, who started a business of bringing to life someone’s story through their journals and life experiences {a.k.a. the Life Story Lady}. She meets with you and helps you go back through your journals, interviews you, revisits pictures with you – then helps you write a story for future generations to read. She keeps your same dialogue throughout most but ensures it flows. I so wish I could read the life story of my great grandmother, or even my mother – in her own words.

This makes me want to write in my journal more often – and not just use it as a gratitude journal. I want to leave behind documentation of the life I lived and give my children something to peruse at a {WAY} later time. Plus, it’s fun to look back to see how I was feeling during a particular time or date.

Kristin gave me a travel journal last year before our trip to Europe and I’m so glad she did. I love to look back and read what I was feeling after a day in Venice or afternoon on the beach in Santorini. I will DEFINITELY be saving this travel journal for my future trips to Ireland, Kauai and St. Bart’s {always visualizing}.

Heather also recently bought me a creative writing journal which I’m really excited to start writing in! 642 Things to Write About is by the San Francisco Writer’s Grotto and challenges you to open up your creative side. The questions are so interesting!

Lately I’ve been daydreaming about becoming a writer and working for a publication like Good Magazine {he.he.} I really want to improve my writing skills by practicing more every day. This journal, along with my regular journal and Cher Joy will be my landscape to do so!

Happy writing to those who journal, too!

You’ve got mail

Friends & family, please check your mailboxes for a special delivery, if you haven’t seen it already!

Look how pretty these stamps are! They reminded me of the coastal trees here in Santa Cruz:

And, remember how I wanted to start framing special mementos (or special moments in my case) ? Well, since this move was sort of a big deal for us, I decided to frame our “We’ve Moved” announcement. Now I just have to figure out where to put it:) Plus, I love the colors.

Happy Valentine’s Day

In lieu of us moving, I wanted to do something extra special this Valentine’s Day. So, I combined these and with this idea for a sweet treat for my co-workers who I’ll miss so much.

What you need:

  • Ingredients for rice crispy treats (marshmallows, rice cereal and butter
  • Frosting or candy coating
  • Sprinkles
  • Heart-sharped cookie cutters
  • Sucker sticks
  • Plastic wrap, ties & scrap paper

Make your rice crispy treats, flatten out and using your heart-shaped cookie-cutter, cut out some hearts!

Let harden just slightly and then “stick”’em! Have fun with the frosting, candy coating and sprinkles to decorate.

Let dry and then insert into a clear baggie cover and twist tie shut.

Add your personalized note. In my case, mine said ‘”OWL” Miss You’.

Then give to your friends! Happy Valentine’s Day!!!

Our mini Alt

If you’re in the blogging world, I’m sure you’ve heard about the Alt Design Summit. There are blog posts galore about how fabulous the retreat is, especially when you get to hear from some of the most creative and innovative bloggers out there. Kristin and I were sad to have missed it this year and will hopefully get our registration in early for the next one.

For more about Alt, you can watch this great video or read these recaps by Oh Happy Day and Oh Hello Friend.

As you may know, One Pretty Place and I like to have blogging parties (where we kick the boys out of the house and blog for hours at a time). For this recent one, I called it a “mini Alt”, a night of blogging and brainstorming! Normally we are in jammies, but because we did dinner out before we got dressed up.

Don’t mind my Color Run tattoo ;)

And her leopard print flats.

While we blogged we watched some empowering movies (like The Devil Wears Prada and How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days), sipped on red wine and cocktail jelly bellies and put dents in our to-do lists.
