Gift idea for a long-distance friend: witty greeting cards

When you can’t see a friend who lives miles away, it’s always nice to send a little note to say that you’re thinking of them. Not an email, not a Facebook message, but an old-fashioned card to say hi. Here in the Cruz, the Book Shop of Santa Cruz is the BEST place for greetings cards. They have a great selection of hand-made, letter press and recycled cards. I especially love the WITTY ones from Waterknot Design, Lark Press and Flybird Press.  I have a few friends across the country, and thought a cutesy, silly card would be a nice gesture. At $4.00-$5.00 each {plus a stamp}, it’s an inexpensive way to send your long-distance friends a note to say hello! In my case, I also like the fact that my dollars are going into greener, more original artists.

When sending a note to a far away friend, something unique and witty always tends to bring joy :)

Happy day! I’m feeling WAY better, so I’m back to the silliness. This week I made a really exciting stride at work, God graced us with beautiful weather and we’re back to the gym working on our bods for Hawaii. Aside from listening to the birdies sing in the morning and getting outside to enjoy the warm Santa Cruz weather, we’ve been watching A LOT of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Where has this show been all my life?! It’s so bad it’s good. And so funny I can’t breathe for most of an episode. My camera is also back in commission, most officially {and auto-focusing like it should}, so I have lots to catch up on the blog. Hope you’re all having a nice January so far – we sure are! Here’s what brought me joy last week:

1. This view.
2. Heather at the studio! I’m so excited to work with my bestie!
3. Morning coffee break with myself.
4. A patio date with my man downtown.

Friends, Heather by Hand

Estrogen overload

Last weekend miss Heather and I had an incredibly GIRLY weekend. When the boys aren’t around, we like to get away with an estrogen loaded, chick day. Here’s an hr by hr of our girls night {which started after I locked my keys in the truck down the hill and had to have a locksmith come out}:

The Downton Abbey marathon started with scones and iced-tea.

After a couple episodes, we brought out the charcuterie.

Then we got the preparations for dinner started.

Wine journal time.

Chicken dinner {my first time making a whole chicken}!

Nail painting, calligraphy and more Downton – there may have been some tears {damn you, Downton!}. Heather’s nail polish fetish is so wonderful.

Ice-cream for episode six.

After passing out in a food coma, we woke up the next day and had breakfast nachos and watched two more episodes. Felt like we were college roomies again!

What are your girl nights like? Please tell me they’re as silly and food-filled as ours ;)

Gift idea: Vintage button earrings

Over the holiday I received SO many compliments on my Vintage Button Earrings, that I found it necessary to share the jeweler with you! My friend, Olive, gave me these Retro Chic White button earrings for my birthday in September and I can’t stop wearing them. They go with everything! The artist, Ali Osborne, is from none other than SANTA CRUZ, and her button jewelry can be found in boutiques downtown. A majority of Button Willow’s jewelry is made from her Grandmother’s vintage button collection or other vintage glass finds, and uniquely enough – GUITAR string! So retro. You don’t have to travel to Santa Cruz to buy these amazingly beautiful earrings – you can visit her Etsy store. I’m going to be purchasing the crystal pair next, and since so many friends loved these on me, I may just gift a few to my girls in Arizona. Happy shopping!

2013 has been kicking my immune system’s butt! Still recovering from a nasty sinus infection over here, but am on antibiotics now so hopefully I’m on the road to recovery. Right now I’m having a quiet moment to myself, while the dogs finally sleep after my exciting girls weekend with Found in the Central Coast. The week was fairly uneventful, with long work days at the studio, gym dates and a hot night out with my man to this new Thai restaurant I’m in love with. The days are chilly, but clear & sunny for most. I hope once I feel better I can really get my year kick-started! Here’s what brought me joy last week:

1. My new travel coffee mug {thanks, Dad}
2. The blue, California sky.
3. Trying a recipe from our new 50 Shades of Chicken cookbook – AMAZING.
4. New jersey sheets!
