To do in Santa Cruz: Hummingbird days

Can you spot the hummingbird??

How about here?

Look – they like to rest, too!

I’ve been wanting to go to the UCSC Arboretum since last summer – so many people talk about it up here. I thought it would be the perfect time to go while my father-in-law was in town and to my surprise when I looked up their events calendar I saw that they were having Hummingbird Days! I love hummingbirds like Robby loves bluebirds. They’re so speedy and cute and zippy! The hummingbird trail was set throughout the Australian garden of the Arboretum – just beautiful! I’ve never been more excited to see a hummingbird in my life, ha. Soon enough the hummingbirds were zooming everywhere, and so loud! It was rather enchanting and peaceful. To sit and enjoy the beautiful day and watch a bunch of hummingbirds flutter around. Such a great day. Sort of made me wish I had studied horticulture in college.

Do you have an arboretum near you?

The coolest father-in-law

I am truly so blessed to have such a cool, easy-going, fun father-in-law. He came in for the weekend and we had the BEST time with him. I thought we’d wear him out, but it turned out he wore US out! Ha. He is one of the kindest and loving people I know.

{took him to Panda Inn – Chinese is his favorite}

{lots of basketball, O’Doul’s and chillaxin on the couch. He even watched The Hunger Games with me:)}

{18 holes of golf late into the night. I was on cloud 9 when the owls starting hooting on hole 16. This man sure can drive a ball – and cart race!}

{a belated birthday celebration over donuts and coffee}

{Sunday we took him to our church and he said he felt like he was home again – happy for that!}

TGIF

My parents fly in tonight and will be spending a long weekend with us in the Cruz. I haven’t seen my parents in 3 months, so I’ve been super anxious and giddy these past few days leading up to their arrival. I’m so excited to show them, my Mom especially, the little pocket of heaven we live in {a.k.a. Santa Cruz}. We have a jam-packed weekend planned for them; hope they can hang ;)

What are your plans for the weekend?

JAM-becue fun

Sister was in town last weekend and the timing was perfect in that she could join us for Heather‘s neighbors’ {and landlords} annual “Jam-becue”! Food, live music and lots of Felton folk.

Things got real crazy when we started playing corn hole. Just look at Heather’s face. {sorry Heather, had to post these!}

Sister won every single game and was pretty proud of herself after:

And in case you’ve never seen a banana slug, well, here you go.
This little slime thing lives in the redwoods and is also the mascot of University of California Santa Cruz.Viscous isn’t it?

Family time

Rob’s family came out earlier this month and they never cease to disappoint when it comes to spontaneity. Beside our 10 mile hike through the redwoods, late-night smores by the beach and donut cravings, the fam decided to have a sand castle building contest. The guy next to Rob? Some random kid who wandered over and wanted to help Rob judge. SO funny.

Riley won! Missing my Tay & Ri…
