Projects, Santa Cruz

Welcome to the Cruz

We had some visitors last weekend and I wanted to do something extra special for them, seeing that it was their first time to Santa Cruz. I got a little crafty and put together welcome bags for each of my girlfriends. Heather, who is amazing at Calligraphy, helped me with the cards. I saw similar bags on Etsy but decided I could do them for cheaper. So I did.

I opted for some beachy gifts: sunblock, Santa Cruz memorabilia, a cold drink and a glass fish bottle topper to theme up with our Napa trip. I accomplished all of this for less than $50. That’s a win in my book!

We also had a birthday to celebrate so I picked out something local and “manly” for him as well .. and added a label.

An update on my frame

Remember the succulent frame I made back in May? Well, it’s doing great.

There are a couple that are being stubborn and not rooting so I put some more soil in and am going to wait a few more weeks before I hang. Also, Heather and I have another DIY project coming up… so excited to share it with you! I’ll give you a clue, it involves a window and chalk!

Pie & patio party

In case you saw my summer bucket list – you would have seen I wanted to throw a pie party. I did this past weekend and it was crazy awesome. Since the 4th of July fell on a Wednesday this year, I decided to keep the red, white and blue theme going. First, us ladies got our bake on:

While the pies baked {or froze}, we enjoyed the party on the patio with the boys {from the left: Olive, Katy, Heather & me}. Our aprons were so comfy we about stayed in them the entire time:

We were all so hungry that we forgot to take pictures of the chicken BBQ sandwiches and slaw and beautiful sides. {sad face}
When the pies were done, we all did some pie-tasting!

For more on the pie-baking and recipes, check out Heather’s blog!

It was great to sit by the fire and watch the day come to a close with new friends {and one old}. I loved having people over.. I’ve been DYING to throw a party, hahaha.

Projects, reads

Summer reads

Summer is here in central Cal and I’ve got my reading list ramped up. I’ve only purchased a couple, the others have been sitting on my shelves, patiently waiting for me to read them.

50 Shades of Grey – powering through this for the sake of the two groups of ladies I’m reading this with. Let’s see if it gets any better.

Games of Thrones – reading with a fellow Harry Potter enthusiast. Already two chapters in and very intrigued! Heard the HBO show is pretty enthralling, too.

The Time Traveler’s Wife – I’ve seen the movie but have been dying to read the book. Heather says it’s life-changing.

The Olive Farm – a memoir I picked up in Santorini when I book swapped at our villa. Brought it home all the way from Greece so might as well read it!

Chocolat – another I’ve always wanted to read.

What are you reading this summer?  Please share!

DIY: Vertical succulent frame

Vertical succulent frames. We’ve all seen them and I’m sure you can agree with me that they’re gorgeous. I’ve wanted to make one for the longest time and last weekend, I finally did! I can now check this off my summer bucket list.

Heather’s Dad made us our succulent frame planters using reclaimed wood from his backyard. If you don’t have a cool Dad like this, you can buy a kit at one of your local nurseries. We bought our succulent cuttings and soil from Succulent Gardens in Castroville {since we already had the planters, we didn’t need to buy a full kit}.

Heather {I say her name a lot, don’t I? :)} had the brilliant idea to host a succulent party. So, she did and we came! Anxious to learn how to make one? Here we go!

Heather set us up under some nice shade. It was a beautiful day for gardening with the girls!

You’ll need a lot of soil.
Isn’t Heather so creative? Look how cute our name tags/instructions were!

Now before you do anything else, make some margaritas {I feel like this is something The Pioneer Woman would say}. This would be fun with sangria, too.

Alright – you’re ready! Remember, it’s crucial that your planter has holes in the back so the soil can breathe and drain water properly.

Lay out your succulent starters so you can see what you have to work with. They’re so cute and small – like little babies!

Start putting your soil in! Keep shaking it back and forth to ensure the soil is evenly distributed.

Once it is filled to the top, you get to pretend you’re an artist of the Earth. Start your design by placing the {very small} roots in the soil pockets. This is the fun part!

Remember to take some pictures with your fellow gardeners {friends}:

When you run out of succulents, that means you’re done. Water it {don’t drown it} and voila! You have a soon to be vertical succulent frame.

How to care for your frame after this point:

  • Lay the frame flat in a cool, bright location to let the succulents take root
  • Water every 7-10 days
  • Allow 8-12 weeks for the succulents to take root before you hang your frame {I’m going to be very impatient with this part, I just know it}

Now celebrate with some dessert! We enjoyed lavender cookies and lemon ice-cream. Absolutely delish!

Now that you know how to make a vertical succulent frame, head over to Heather’s blog on how to throw a succulent framing party. Heather did such a great job with the details {if you can’t tell already} and it really made everything so memorable. This afternoon with the girls was so much fun and I highly recommend you do it with yours! Let me know if you have any questions!
