Cafe Monarch

IMG_5840My man turned the big 3-1 this past weekend. And because it also fell on Father’s Day this year, I had to split up the celebrating between the two days. So on Saturday, I took Rob out to a semi-fancy dinner. Got a babysitter (thanks Pam!), did the driving and surprised him with a magnificent restaurant choice. I heard about Cafe Monarch from a local Arizonan at work and immediately made us reservations. A four-course meal, complete with Amuse Bouche, a summer salad, choice of select entrees and choice of desserts. Every other week they change out their menu. Fortunately, our menu had filet and rib eye as entree options and of course we went for it. I can’t tell you enough how incredible this place was. I mean, look at all of their awards! So romantic and so delicious. We sat on the back patio and with the shade, misters, palms, green vines, candles and mood music..  the suns setting.. I didn’t even know I was in Arizona, sitting in 112 degree weather. We felt like we were sitting in a cafe in Europe. Service was excellent and the wine choices with our meats were on point. Every bite and sip was delightful. Mouth-watering. You know it’s good when we’re smiling and laughing at how much we spend to eat really amazing food. The monarchs and bird cage accents all around added just the right amount of charm. We’ll definitely be going back.

IMG_5850IMG_5839IMG_5841IMG_5845IMG_5846Ordered “The Monarch” to start with – gin with a cosmopolitan twist.

IMG_5843IMG_5849IMG_5852I love this man so much. I could stare at him all day. Sort of like Jace, ha. He’s starting to get a little gray around his temples, and taller it seems like?! We had the best night talking about our now toddler and jobs and life in Arizona. It’s really so cool to be going through life with someone, to see the change in the years on our faces and in our memories.  There is no one else I’d want to grow old(er) with. In case you’re looking for a little bit of birthday wisdom, Rob was full of it. In Rob’s words, as we get older, we finally realize how precious time is. That it’s the most expensive thing we could ever own. And more importantly, because it’s so valuable, we need to choose wisely with what we do with it. With who we spend time and with who we give our time away to. Any way, some food for thought. Happy Birthday my handsome husband!

IMG_5853IMG_5854IMG_5858They put a sparkler on his raspberry cheesecake and gave us an Owl wine-topper! Um, you had me at free wine-topper.

IMG_5865The one picture we get of me of course looks like this… no peach crepe to show, and half blurry, not looking, taking a sip of coffee. It’s helpless.

Working on my wall collage

IMG_5792I’m currently obsessing over a wall in my living room. I got a canvas wrap of one of my favorite pictures of Jace and because it’s fairly small, I decided to start to build out from it, with other picture frames and pieces, creating sort of a wall collage. So now I’m on the hunt for new pieces to add to it. I’ve found a cute mirror at Home Goods (I could spend all day at Home Goods!), a white wood box from Target for my favorite house plant, a wood panel with a mason jar painted on it .. but I need a good 2-3 more design elements to make it complete. Such a task!  .. especially when the coloring needs to match Jace’s canvas. Thinking I will try Hobby Lobby and then maybe Ross.  Any other places I should look for good decor options? Not sure this was worth a blog post but I’m excited to add some color and texture to my walls. I usually keep them so bare, so this is a big deal for me, lol!

Arcadia, Phoenix

Thank God for misters

IMG_5768On Fridays we’re getting into the habit of meeting at Jace’s day care for a dual pick-up and then to O.H.S.O. Brewery for dinner as a family. We talk about our week, entertain J and then over eat. OHSO Brewery has the BEST patio seating overlooking Camelback mountain. It also has wonderful umbrella coverage, fans and above all – MISTERS. I forgot how much I love and appreciate misters in Arizona. They feel so wonderful when your body is clammy and sweaty. I’m pretty much going to be seeking these babies out every where we go this summer, now that the temps are in the 100s. Plus, it’s so fun to see Jace’s little face get tickled with the mist. It’s the little things in life, right?! OHSO is definitely one of our favorite spots around town. It’s dog friendly, plus family-friendly!  Sister met us there for dinner, too and we ordered our favorites beers on happy hour (Orange Blossom, Mr. Pineapple, OHSO Hoppy). We both ordered the kalua pork,  Rob the surf & turf. I’m also a huge fan of their garlic shrimp tacos .. seriously amazing. They have an awesome happy hour (and brunch on the weekends). If you’re in the Arizona area, you should definitely check ’em out. But if you’re a local, I’m sure you already have because everyone is in love with this place.

IMG_5775IMG_5772IMG_5758IMG_5757IMG_5764IMG_5766IMG_5769With sister! I’m looking more and more like a 40-year old Mom I’ve decided. Must get a tan ASAP.

IMG_5770IMG_5771IMG_5762I couldn’t be more proud of Jace’s use of Silk & Shine. Such a chapstick pro already!

Jace

Where’s Jace?

IMG_5592Jace’s favorite thing to do lately is hide (or be chased). And his favorite place to hide is this little space between the refrigerator and wall in the kitchen. He likes when I run around, calling his name, and then I hear his giggles from his hiding space and then turn around the corner, finding him! When he knows he’s been found, he gets this proud, wild grin on his face like he’s out-smarted me. Such a goofball. Hurts my heart how much I love him.

Friends, Giving Joy, Heather by Hand

National Best Friend’s Day – June 8

IMG_5728National Best Friend’s Day might be my favorite non-holiday ever. It’s my chance to tell my bestie how awesome she is. If you already don’t know, Heather has been my bestie for .. how many years now?  Oh, jeez. 10 years?! Holy crap, we’re getting old. I think we both have been secretly shopping for each other, like it’s our birthdays, in preparation for this special day. I found some goodies for her, including this clever “Why You’re My Bestie” book.  And these Aid Through Trade friendship bracelets. Oh, and some lavender soap that reminded me of her handwriting, called Hand in Hand. Sound familiar??? ;) With all my gifts in hand, one night last week, I sat myself down with some red wine and started filling in my bestie journal. I must admit, I cracked up a few times thinking of old times. It was such a fun little activity. Made me smile thinking of my bestie who’s far away. I hope she loved her goodies. And I hope you spoiled your bestie, too!
