Weekend car

Have you heard of a weekender? A car you use only on the weekends? Well, living in California has made my urge to get a little rag top more dramatic. All I daydream about is a convertible to drive the coastline in or cruise around the hills in. If I could have my pick, I’d pick an oldie – a volkswagen cabrio or bug. Plus I think Rob would look pretty handsome in one.

If you could have a weekend car, what would you get?

California, Davenport

The day after our Big Sur adventure, Heather invited us to Davenport for the day with her – a secluded cliff beach just north of Santa Cruz by 15 minutes. The beach is famous for its sea-glass – scraps of colored glass tunneled by a natural river from famous glass artists up the hill. Sunday is beach day, as you know, so we of course went!

Heather and I showed up in the same pants and same nail polish {typical}:

Once we parked off the 1, we took a small trail to the beach.

Heather brought her ukulele and Rob quickly stole it from her to make up his own tunes {sorry about the sun spot!}. It is the coolest instrument and I’m so excited to have a friend who’s learning to play it!

After some hours in the sun and sea breeze, we went to the Roadhouse for clam chowder, endless bread and a half glass of tempranillo.

We didn’t find any sea glass so we’re definitely going back. I have a feeling there is more to Davenport still to discover!

The BIG SURprise

On a Thursday Rob sent me an email that said he had a surprise for me on Saturday. I normally HATE being surprised and have to know EVERYTHING that’s going on. Even as a child I’d snoop into my Christmas gifts or raid my mom’s purse for receipts before my birthday. But since my weekends are pretty wide open now, I let Rob take me for a surprise ride and didn’t put up a fight. I didn’t find out what we were doing until I sat in the car. And to my delight, I pulled out a piece of paper from the glove department to discover that we were going horse-back riding on the beach in Big Sur! I think I smiled the entire drive there.

The drive was absolutely beautiful. It felt like we were on the coastline of some exotic island:

We stopped for a quick picnic in one of the parks in Big Sur.

Then we went to the stables! We signed up for the “Afternoon Delight” tour, which took us riding through the redwoods, colorful meadows, hills, the Big Sur river, {poison oak} and last but not least – the beach!

Thumbs up {again}!

My stallion ;)

I’m glad my horse liked to gallop a lot – I couldn’t stop laughing!

It was the best day. I’m so in love with California weekends!

Summer 2012 bucket list

Somewhere in the blogosphere Heather saw a post on making a summer bucket list. But can we find what blog it was now? Noooooo. Well regardless, we thought it was brilliant and decided to make our own! With this being my first summer living in California, mine is pretty aggressive {see below}.

{Picture taken by Sue – Perishable Perspectives} – I want one so bad!
1. Drink wine in Sonoma
2. Drink wine in Napa {planned for August}; and maybe enjoy a mud bath
3. Spend a day at the Santa Cruz boardwalk {already planned for Heather’s birthday}
4. Go whale-watching
5. Go paddle surfing
6. Go camping or cabining {Yosemite, Lake Tahoe or Cambria]
7. Go white-water rafting {planned for September}
8. Eat a macaroon
9. Make a succulent frame {planned for later this month}
10. Host a pie party
11. Enjoy a cocktail at the top of the Marriott Marquis hotel in San Fran {sister, get ready!}
12. Attend a meditation session
13. See Mendocino
14. Plant an herb box
And… I’m stopping there!  Here is Heather’s. I’m pretty sure I’ll be accomplishing some of hers, too ;) or tagging along at least.
What are your to-do’s for this summer? Please share!!!

Aptos, California, Felton, Pebble beach, Santa Cruz

I’m back!

Well, we are in Santa Cruz and all settled in! And I must say, it’s absolutely breathtaking. Crystal-clear, cold mornings, fragrant flower beds, the smell of the ocean, sand in your feet, locally churned ice-cream… Shall I go on?

My Dad and sister made the drive up with us to help us unpack and get situated. And we’re so happy they did. This past weekend is one we’ll certainly remember always. We basically spent every minute together and it was wonderful. Once all the boxes were unpacked, we spent the rest of the weekend driving around. Saturday we spent the day around Monterey Bay. My Dad wanted to see Pebble Beach and the redwoods. So, we did!

Before we did the scenic, 17-mile road drive, we stopped first at the Spanish Bay Inn for cocktails and the ocean view on the patio.

Then we continued on the coastal drive.

We finally got to Pebble Beach. My Dad was ecstatic to be on the 18th hole (or near it).

Before they flew back on Sunday, we went for a walk through the redwoods.

I was sad to see them go. They were so kind to have made the trip up and did so much to help us get settled in to our little cottage in the hills. Did I mention that we can see the ocean as we come out of our driveway? Well, we can. Again, it’s a little surreal up here.

Thanks Pam and Dad for all your help!!!
