The best barbecue in Santa Cruz: Aptos St. Barbecue

When we have visitors to Santa Cruz, it’s almost guaranteed that one of the nights {OK maybe two} will be spent eating out. Yeah, we’ll grill and make big breakfasts at the beach house, but sometimes, dinner just isn’t going to happen. And Rob and I together are a bad combination because we love to eat and we love to eat out, ha. So when visitors come, we jump at the opportunity to take them somewhere local & delicious. On Tayler’s last night we took her to Aptos St. Barbecue in downtown Aptos, one of our favorite go-to spots for a good dinner (or late lunch}. It’s like walking into a Southern BBQ/music house — live blues most nights, great beer selection, picnic table style eating and a barbecue-infused menu! Tay ordered a chicken salad, but we did not. I always go for the pulled pork, and Rob the tri-tip sandwich. Seriously amazing. Meat is tender and soft — barbecued to perfection that day. I can’t get enough of their barbecue sauce either. I could drink it. I basically soak my sandwich in it. Their coleslaw is the real kind of coleslaw, too — refreshing and light. You probably don’t know, but I’m a huge cole slaw snob and this place just gets in. If you go, try any of their meats, but on the garlic bun. It will change your world and keep you coming back for more.

Taylor is about the sweetest, most gorgeous thing. Love her with all my heart.
And until I can get someone to take my picture without me blinking or scratching my noise or cleaning my teeth, here are some of the two men in my life:
If you see us out & about, we’re probably doing this {kissing jace face!}.
Check ’em out!

A birthday bonfire

A dear friend of ours celebrated a birthday in July and we wanted to make it extra special. This gal means the world to us {in case you can’t already tell, she’s plastered all over my blog half the time}. I know she’s not going to like something sappy written about her, but she’s seriously a beautiful person. I don’t know what I’d do without her. Miss Heather wanted a low-key birthday so we did just that. We brought the party to the beach for a sunset bonfire with Smoked Chocolate S’mores, champagne . . & hot dogs, hahahaha. Jace didn’t want to miss his Auntie’s birthday so he came along for the party, too. I know this is a little back-dated, but Happy Birthday Heather. Hope you enjoyed!

To breakfast in a hoodie

We love going out to breakfast on the weekends and adding a couple layers of clothing on so we can sit on the patio.  Jace is starting to fit into his little hoodies now, and I’m so excited. Hoodies in any shape or form on babies is the cutest. This is one thing I’ve been looking forward to since he was born. Hoodies! I hope we always live somewhere where Jace can wear hoodies all year long if he wants to. Oh, the little things, right?

Scenes from the weekend

Hi friends. Hope you all had a nice Memorial Day weekend! My parents came into town for the weekend and we had such a great time. I love the days leading up to a visit with my family. Each phone call we sound more giddy and bubbly than the last. You know when you can hear someone smile on the phone? Well, we do a lot of smiling on the phone leading up to a long weekend together. I don’t know who they were more excited to see, Rob or Jace, ha. Sometimes I feel like I’m old news compared to those two. They’re such characters. I must be boring ;). We tried to keep things low-key, which means I didn’t plan a million things for us to do, like I normally do. However, we did hit up the farmer’s market in Aptos, made a lot of home-cooked meals together and ventured out to 17-mile drive for a cruise along the ocean. Every time my parents come into down we have the most beautiful weather. Never has it rained while they’ve been here. Seeing them cuddle Jace and make noises and talk to him touched my heart. It’s so fun to watch him look at their faces and smile. He’s so much fun right now and something inside of me is breaking knowing they can’t see him each week and watch him learn new things. When Jace went to bed, we watched movies and talked on the back patio, and laughed at Talking Tyler. Such a good time. It was pretty hard to say goodbye at the airport. This California dream sure is bittersweet sometimes. Well, anyway, here were some of the scenes from over the weekend.

Mother’s Day on hidden beach

I loved going around town this past weekend with Jace and Rob and hearing strangers wish me a Happy Mother’s Day. I obviously know I’m a mom now, but to hear others acknowledge it is surreal! I love that I have a mini person. I love when he locks eyes with me and smiles. I love that I carried him for 9 months. I love when he nestles into my nook for cuddles. I pretty much love being a Mom. Jace’s Mom. And it’s only going to get better. For Mother’s Day this year, we went to one of our favorite beaches here in Santa Cruz: hidden beach. I sure do feel prettier when I have a base tan, so I wanted to get my tan on. We packed a little picnic, Jace’s toys, our beach tent and spent most of the day soaking up the California sunshine. The beach was so white and clean. The breeze was warm. The water was gorgeous. It was the most perfect day with my two men. To all you mommas out there, hope you had a nice Mother’s Day!

{He only got fussy a couple times. Nothing we can’t handle though ;)}
{Did I foresee this or what?! Jace is totally a mini Rob}
{more of that watermelon beer — obsessed! Pardon my boobs.}
