Food, reads

I’m reading “Savor” and it’s wonderful

IMG_5746Since our move, you could say I’ve been a little… overwhelmed.. with life. This city is 10x the pace of Santa Cruz and I know that times as many people. And with a new job, I’m having to put myself out there all over again to make new friends and connections. I’m also having to push myself professionally in ways I’ve never done before. It’s all good though, so I’m trying not to complain. I have a beautiful family and finally a fabulous day care. New restaurants to try, a good fitness routine .. all is OK. I’m just still having a hard time adjusting to life here again. I guess life just feels different and I’m still trying to figure out the “now” and what’s best for us. Trying to find a good balance of down time with Jace and everyone else. A friend of mine recently recommended a book of devotions, called Savor, by Shauna Neiquist — Living Abundantly Where You Are, As You Are. Since starting it a couple weeks ago, I must say, it’s completely changed how I look at things, reminding me to cherish the every day splendors and gifts God provides. And to never forget the power of prayer. This one devotion in particular, titled “This is it”, has particularly stuck with me. I of course can’t share it all, but here is one of the lines: “This pedestrian life is the most precious thing any of us will ever experience.”… Every devotion is the true-to-life, reality of God’s love and this life we are all living. It’s a reminder to focus on the present and savor every disaster, every triumph. It literally brings me to tears every night, and each devotion is only a couple paragraphs! I’m not a crier, but her words reach into my soul, into the whole purpose of living this mortal life. It’s wonderful. And what’s ALSO wonderful are the recipes! Mrs. Neiquist also has recipes sprinkled throughout the book — recipes you can enjoy around the table with your loved ones. I completely share in her love for food and dinner parties. (Shauna, can we be best friends, please?) So, this morning I got up early and made her Baked French Toast for my boys. I was going to start it last night to let the goodness soak into the cinnamon bread overnight but I passed out soon after Jace went to bed, haha. I had to cut the recipe in half, seeing that I wasn’t going to feast with a bigger breakfast party but it still came out just as good. The next time I make it I will probably use less cream cheese, but nonetheless, it was perfect. Not too sweet, not too plain. Just a traditional plate of french toast, with some creamy cream cheese. The syrup on top brings it to life, too. Soooo good!  Once I find some good peaches I want to make her grilled peach and caramel sundae! I would highly recommend this book to anyone wanting a little perspective on life. Beautiful scripture and life moments anyone can relate to. She is a eloquent, spiritual and honest writer. Once I get through this book I may get her other book, Cold Tangerines. Until next time, happy living friends!

Phoenix

A morning at the Pineapple Triangle

IMG_5659This past weekend I went with some of my girls (+ little Maivyn Bell) to the Pineapple Triangle craft market at The Coft Downtown in Phoenix. . I’ve never seen so many pineapple things in my life. It was glorious. Pineapple prints, pineapple shirts, pineapple charms and necklaces  .. the items go on. Live music, local artisans GALORE .. so much to browse and ask into. I went a little crazy. It was the perfect morning supporting our local artists and business owners. Very inspiring. If I had more time in my schedule, I would so take a jewelry making class. Ever since I got back to Arizona, I’ve been craving bronze and teal jewelry. It’s such the balance between the southwest and beach. I did splurge on a wood print by Rufus Salvaged Goods, for my wall project I’m working on at home and some jewelry gifts.  My girls also took home some wonderful pieces. I will definitely be keeping up with the Pineapple Triangle and any other events they host in the near future. So impressed!

IMG_5676IMG_5670IMG_5674Loved the chandeliers!

IMG_5664IMG_5668I would say my sister loved Teaspressa‘s take on a vanilla latte!

Activities for Kids, Mesa

A whole 10 minutes at a “Splash Pad”

IMG_5575Families around these parts go pretty crazy for the “splash pads” around town = slabs of cement that shoot water out of the ground for kids’ enjoyment. It’s similar to when kids used to run through the backyard sprinklers, but instead of grass, they’re running on cement. A PAD of cement to be more exact. Literally. Anyways, knowing how much Jace loves water, I was interested to see what all the hype was about. On Saturday we went to Riverview Park in Mesa. Not really sure it was the best thing for a toddler, but all the other kids were having a total blast, and I knew Jace would be in heaven no matter what. Jace can’t be trusted to his own feet just yet, so poor Rob had hand-holding, splash pad duty. No way I was going to get wet (I’m holding out for the 112 degree day to go splash pad crazy myself). They both got soaked. After the first towel dry (little boy was a little cold), we decided for one last walk through, in which Jace, trying to run like the other kids, tripped and fell quickly straight on his face. On the cement. Not cool. My fault I guess for taking a toddler to a “splash pad”, but cement?! Really, Mesa? Can’t opt for any other kind of surface for this splash pad?! Like something spongey or with better drainage? But cement is everywhere so what can I expect. It must be used for a reason.  I’m going to stay optimistic though, knowing how ridiculously hot it’s about to get here. I hear Tempe Beach Park’s “splash pad” is King to all the others, so we may try that one later this summer, when Jace isn’t still in clumsy mode. With that said, we lasted all of 10 minutes on this splash pad (of cement) lol .. we literally spent more time parking, changing, applying sunblock and towel drying than on the actual splash pad. hilarious.

IMG_5576IMG_5578 IMG_5581How do you like them boogers?!

IMG_5583Jace really has no fear. He wanted to run so bad like all the other kids and would put himself right in the action. I’m so happy he’s ready to take on life. And pain. Ha.

Food, Gilbert

Food Trucks Friday

IMG_5554The food truck frenzy here in the Phoenix area is pretty big. but just on Fridays I’ve found. I work downtown by the Biltmore and the food trucks come driving up, but only on Fridays. And downtown Gilbert is the same, but they take it to a whole new level. They go all out. I mean, look at their typical line up! We decided to get there early on Friday, knowing that waiting in long lines with a toddler wouldn’t be fun. After a good scan of the options, we both went for the Best Dressed Dog. Seriously amazing. We both ordered the BBQ dog = pulled pork with the magic Judd sauce and coleslaw.

IMG_5561 IMG_5562 IMG_5563Dessert was at Udder Delights. I almost went for the Strawberry Moscato Smoothie, but decided on her root beer float. I can never resist a good root beer float. Little boy and Rob split a regular vanilla. Udder Delights was so great. They had hula hoops and little kids chairs set up with music. Such a fun colorful food truck! IMG_5564IMG_5566IMG_5569I’m pretty happy to live so close to food truck Fridays in downtown Gilbert. All this good food, so close to home!

Family

Mother’s Day

This Mother’s Day weekend was a total blur. I think there was some wine, some pedis and sleeping in. Unfortunately I came down with a kidney infection, one that put me in the urgent care on Sunday. That was fun. Not. I blame Arizona for making me sweaty and dehydrated. Aside from the back pain and other bodily issues, it was a nice weekend. Being a Mother is such a blessing, such an honor. I love being Jace’s momma. To know that I brought him into this world, carried him, and birthed him. It’s truly a God-given miracle. Creating life is so incredible and now when I see Jace’s face, I see myself. I see a piece of me. Every day I see myself more as a mother. When I comb his hair back, when I wipe his little tush. When I share watermelon slices with him. When I play peek-a-boo and we read books. The little touch of his hand, his belly laughs when I tickle him, his blue eyes, the way he says “uh-oh!”. It makes my heart burst every time. To know him and want to help him learn and explore and play. This motherhood thing is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. At times I’m exhausted, but the minute he hugs me tightly, puts his head between my legs or smiles at me, I’m done. I love watching him figure things out and put two and two together. A little person is in the works, because of me (&Rob). A little soul is learning to hug and embrace and get a rise out of you, to try his limits. I care so much about him and thank God every day that I get to be his little keeper for now. It’s such a huge responsibility and crazy hard sometimes, but I’m going to do my best. His heart is so good already, I feel it. And I am capable of being better, for him.

Here are some pictures from the weekend:)) Spent Saturday with my Mom at Vintage 95 and then to the nail salon for pedicures. Little boy joined us, too and snacked with us.

IMG_5422 IMG_5423 IMG_5427Sunday I slept in, then we went to Postino’s for brunch, before my back pain kicked in with the kidneys. Then spent some time at the Urgent Care.

IMG_5425 IMG_5426Thankfully, the pain went away and I was given some magical antibiotics. We spent the rest of the day with Jace and family, and playing in the grass behind our house, after Jace woke up.

IMG_5448IMG_5428IMG_5433IMG_5451IMG_5443 IMG_5438 IMG_5439Jace thought it would be fun to run around with rocks. I think he has officially entered toddler-ville. He just loves to live on the wild side. He’d walk straight into the pool if we let him, ha. And dang he runs so fast! Such a little speed demon midget!

IMG_5452 IMG_5454 IMG_5453Along with my trashy mags and gum, Jace also got me some coupons to redeem later. Pretty cute (good job husband;))IMG_5445Hope all you mothers out there had a wonderful day. You deserve it.
